Ryan Barker is from the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations. He is 36 years old. Ryan is an NEDC Business Award Winner 2023 - Best Youth-Owned Business
Ryan started as a first-year apprentice at Camosun College then moved his way up to complete his 4th year and obtain his Red Seal at Vancouver Island University. He started his new home construction business soon after in May of 2018. R. Barker Contracting is a renowned construction company led by a Red Seal Carpenter with 15 years of experience.
They specialize in custom log houses to commercial buildings, the team combines traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. Ryan’s biggest job was a 9000 square foot mansion which he is very proud of. He works with a crew of 7 while his wife Tess Barker manages the finances and paperwork. This gives him the time and focus to work on-site and to build a strong work team and environment. His business best practice is to ensure customer satisfaction. Ryan says NEDC was ‘super helpful’ with loans and support when the banks in town would not help him. He is very grateful for that! Ryan’s aspiration for his business is to be able to develop multi-residential homes. There are always challenges in running your own business, he says.
Ryan’s advice to entrepreneurs who are just starting is to “make sure you have all the qualifications and the know-how. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions to those who are more experienced.” If you are struggling “hang in there and reach out for help if you need it.”
